Hayfever

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a common allergic reaction to pollen — a fine powder released by plants. When pollen comes into contact with your eyes, nose, mouth or skin, it can cause a range of unpleasant symptoms.

Common Symptoms of Hay Fever

  • Sneezing and coughing

  • Runny or blocked nose

  • Itchy, red or watery eyes

  • Loss of smell

  • Headache

  • Fatigue

Symptoms tend to be worse from March to September, especially on warm, humid, and windy days when the pollen count is high.

👉 You can check the daily pollen forecast on the Met Éireann website.

Hay Fever or Something Else?

Hay fever symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for a cold or even COVID-19. If you're unsure, always consult your pharmacist or GP for advice.

Home Tips to Manage Hay Fever

Prevention is key, and these home strategies can really help reduce exposure:

  • Shower and change your clothes after being outside

  • Vacuum regularly and keep windows/doors shut

  • Put Vaseline around your nostrils to trap pollen

  • Dust with a damp cloth

  • Keep pets off furniture — they can carry pollen in their fur

  • Avoid drying clothes outdoors during high pollen days

  • Don’t cut the grass or bring fresh flowers indoors

Treatment Options

When home remedies aren’t enough, over-the-counter hay fever treatments can provide fast and effective relief.
